A quasi culinary rut.
So I’ve been enjoying a vegetarian diet for the better part of six months now. I’m 25lbs lighter, my uniforms fit better, and coworkers have mentioned a more pleasant disposition on my behalf.
I’m happy with it so far… Six months ago, you couldn’t get me in the same area code as spinach, broccoli, bell peppers, cabbage, or god forbid… asparagus. Now I’m making sandwiches out of this stuff…
As a side note, I should mention that I didn’t go totally vegan. I still consume eggs, and dairy… which plops me into the “locto-ovo” vegetarian demographic. I just don’t know if I could survive on soy replacements for everything I’m used to eating.
I’m not just new to vegetarianism, I’m also relatively new to cooking for myself consistently. The only time that I’ve really found myself missing animal flesh in my diet is when I’m in the kitchen. Having meat as a main-course takes 9/10ths of the thinking out of making a meal.
A Meat-eater’s guide to dinner :
Pick an animal
Pick a body part
Pick a starch
Pick a veggie *
… meal complete.
*Only fully applicable if you’re female. Males ages 18-25 tend to skip this option.
Now that I’ve gone veg, I find myself at a loss when I’m trying to assemble a tasty meal. I have a fridge full of awesome food… but I can’t really bring it all together, yet.
It’s like walking into a record store without anything in particular in mind as you cross the threshold. You could be in there for hours trying to remember some random record that you, only days prior to entering, couldn’t live without. Now you stumped… maybe even disappointed. Be that as it may… you can live without a CD, but can’t live without food.
Anyway… Feel free to send any of your favorite veggie recipes my way. I’m always in the market for meals of the tasty variety.

You know, the last few years when I was living alone, I got into a really hopeless cooking rut. Cereal for breakfast, grilled cheese for lunch, some kind of cheesy pasta concoction I’d throw together for dinner. Every day. It made grocery shopping incredibly easy. I just needed to stay stocked up on five or six different items.
Last month I moved back with my dad, and he has a housekeeper, so I never have to cook shit. Strange thing is, now I kind of miss my rut.
